Rolls-Royce to introduce high-class Phantom Drophead Coupe at NAIAS

Rolls-Royce's new Phantom Drophead Coupe will be unveiled to the world at the North American International Auto Show this weekend before the model goes into production later on in 2007.

In a striking photograph issued by the luxury carmaker, the Drophead Coupe showcases four seats, two doors and some design elements from the 100EX- an experimental concept convertible from 2004. One of the most interesting of these elements are the brushed steel hood and A-Pillars, which are machined before being hand-finished for a perfect luster. Additionally, teak decking is installed in the rear- treated with a blend of oils to maintain a long-lasting finish.

The fabric roof is the largest of any production convertible. It's lined with cashmere and engineered to fit in as tiny a space as possible, while multi-layer construction ensures quiet operation. Luggage is handled by a split-tail compartment which opens in two parts like a picnic basket, and the lower part of the tailgate transforms into a comfortable seat for two when lowered.

Motivation for the refined roadster comes from a 6.8 litre V-12 engine which delivers 0-60 in around 5.7 seconds.

The new Phantom Drophead Coupe will command a hefty price of $407,000 (US) when it goes on sale- a modest price for customers after one of the worlds most luxurious convertibles.
